🏛️ 10 Must-Do Highlights

1. Galápagos Islands Exhibit

Step into one of the most legendary island chains on Earth without leaving Texas! The Houston Zoo's Galápagos Islands immerses guests in an environment evoking the archipelago's unique landscapes and oceanic habitats. This exhibit features species including Galapagos tortoises, Humboldt penguins, California sea lions, bonnethead sharks, and Sally Lightfoot crabs. The star attraction is the 270,000-gallon One Ocean aquarium where you can watch sea lions swim overhead in a mesmerizing underwater ballet. Don't miss the penguin habitat—remember to bring a sweater as this space is kept cool for penguins and can get chilly!

2. South America's Pantanal

The South America's Pantanal is a 4.2-acre exhibit that displays the blue-throated macaw, jaguar, giant river otter, Baird's tapir, greater rhea, capybara, and giant anteater. When you enter this immersive exhibit, you'll see rustic buildings similar to ecolodges that sit alongside rivers in the real Pantanal region along with more than 51 unique animal species. Watch jaguars prowl, giant otters play underwater, and capybaras lounge—this is Brazil's wild wetlands brought to life in Houston!

3. African Forest

Experience the majesty of Africa in this sprawling habitat. Exhibits feature rhinos, zebras and giraffes, alongside western lowland gorillas and African lions. The Giraffe Feeding Platform is an absolute must—there's nothing quite like looking into the gentle eyes of these towering creatures as you hand-feed them. This exhibit showcases the zoo's commitment to recreating natural habitats that allow animals to thrive.

4. Elephant Encounters

The McNair Elephant Habitat is home to a magnificent herd of Asian elephants. But here's where it gets truly special: You can feed elephants, hear stories about the herd, and touch one of these amazing creatures with a photo opportunity. For the ultimate experience, head behind the scenes to help scrub down one of the elephants during the Elephant Bath encounter (note: you may get wet!).

5. Wortham World of Primates

A winding boardwalk through a natural setting displays a variety of rare and endangered primates, including lemurs, monkeys, gibbons, and orangutans. You'll have access to viewing endangered, rare primates like Max and Murray, two white-cheeked gibbons. Watch orangutans swing overhead and lemurs leap through the trees in this immersive jungle experience.

6. Birds of the World

The Houston Zoo is home to one of the largest collections of birds of any U.S. zoo with more than 200 species and 800 birds. Three main bird exhibits encompass the collection: Fischer Bird Garden, the Tropical Bird House and Birds of the World. Walk among Chilean flamingos in the South American Wetlands aviary and spot rare species like the St. Vincent Island Amazon parrot. The brand-new exhibit showcases the zoo's leadership in avian conservation.

7. Carruth Natural Encounters

The Allen H. and Ethel G. Carruth Natural Encounters is a special building at the zoo where an adventure through an entire continent is simulated. Visitors learn about animals from the river's edge, rainforest canopy, desert, and coral reef. Be prepared to be mesmerized as waterfalls extend into pools with animals at every angle including moon jellies (jellyfish), Asian small-clawed otters and naked mole rats. This air-conditioned wonder is perfect for escaping Houston's heat!

8. Kathrine G. McGovern Children's Zoo

Explore a realistic bat cave or watch a river otter frolic underwater along with bald eagles, toads, foxes, porcupines and goats. The petting zoo allows kids to interact with friendly goats, and there's a splash pad for cooling off during summer visits. This area is designed specifically to engage young visitors and foster their love for wildlife.

9. Carnivore Corner

Get up close with the zoo's apex predators! The carnivore exhibit is home to the lion, Malayan tiger, clouded leopard, American black bear, African wild dog, leopard, and cheetah. Watch feeding demonstrations and keeper chats to learn about these magnificent hunters and the conservation efforts protecting them in the wild.

10. Special Animal Encounters

Go beyond observation with hands-on experiences! Go behind the scenes at the Galápagos Islands exhibit and meet penguins up close. You will learn from the world-class animal care team about what it's like to care for the penguin colony and experience a special meet-and-greet. You will have the opportunity to learn about sea lions, pose for photos, and assist the keepers with a short training session. These premium experiences (additional fees apply) create unforgettable memories.
